Hi, I’m Evi. Welcome to my online home, where I try and figure out what ‘home’ actually means.
Is home a building? A place? A town, country, or community? A person? An object? A memory? Is home where you belong? And if so, is it something you find, or something you build? Is it where you are now, or where you’re from?
As a chronic mover I dread the question ‘where are you from?’, and it’s one I’m asked often. I was born in the UK, grew up in Canada, have Estonian roots, and I’ve moved more times than years I’ve been alive. 50 moves, to be exact.
’50?! Why?’ Is the wide-eyed response I often receive. And honestly, I’m not quite sure why. We weren’t a military family, we hadn’t run away to join the circus (though some days our home certainly felt like one), and while 9 of my moves were before the age of 8, the rest have been as an adult.
In my upcoming book ‘Wherever I Go: A story of 50 moves in less than 50 years’, I’ll be exploring the motivations behind my many moves. And as I explore my own relationship with the idea of home, I’ll be exploring other people’s ideas on this blog.
